Project Overview:

Design services were provided by McMahon for this federally-funded  project. A focal point of the Calumet Drive project is its intersection with North Avenue. Both streets which intersect at a 45-degree angle are classified as arterial roadways in the City of Sheboygan. An intersection control evaluation was performed, and it  determined that maintaining the existing signalized intersection with improvements was the only feasible alternative. Much of the design centered around the operation of this intersection

Improvements for the 4-lane principal arterial included geometric alterations, pedestrian refuge islands, bike lanes, street lighting and traffic signal improvements including phasing/timing changes.

It was necessary to maintain traffic flow during construction due to proximity to schools, manufacturing and commercial businesses.

Other improvements included a retaining wall with railing, new storm sewer, improvements to the sanitary sewer and water system, and street lighting. Communication with utilities was vital to the project.
