McMahon is proud to have a long-standing partnership with many of its clients including Road America of Elkhart Lake.
Since our work began with Road America in 1999, we have contributed significantly to its campus with nearly all divisions of our team having a hand in making it what it is today. We know that Road America is a beloved venue for drivers and racegoers alike. The 640-acre, park-like grounds welcome hundreds of thousands of people each year. From new buildings and bridges to revitalizing existing infrastructure, our architects and civil engineers take pride in ensuring that Road America remains iconic, driving tourism and creating memories for generations.
Enhancements for drivers and fans
The tunnel project, which began in 2006, marked a significant milestone in Road America’s infrastructure improvements. After conducting a comprehensive campus and traffic study, McMahon managed the installation of a 168’x36’ tunnel beneath the track, replacing the aged Billy Mitchell Bridge. This tunnel facilitated better traffic flow and accessibility, leading to dramatic improvements in the interior paddock and concession areas for both racers and fans.
In 2018, the GIS team at McMahon began creating a customized web application for the track designed to enhance the overall visitor experience.
In 2020, McMahon’s civil, architectural and structural departments helped to create a new concession stand for fans and visitors.
The Motorplex Building, completed in 2021, includes a ticket office, race controls and a spacious area for gatherings. Additionally, it has a second floor viewing platform overlooking the go-kart racing track, which our civil team initially designed in 2000. This comprehensive project involved our architectural, structural, civil, MEP (mechanical, electrical, plumbing) and construction and operations services teams.
In 2022, McMahon completed the Johnsonville Bridge, its fourth at the track, which now features dedicated pedestrian lanes and higher clearance, improving safety and accessibility for all users. This project required the coordinated efforts of our structural, civil and construction and operations services teams.
Also in 2022, the architecture team renovated the race control center in the VIP Tower, upgrading it with new glass walls and ceiling coverings, flooring and casework.
McMahon worked on creating new cart and pedestrian trails for spectators in 2023 and 2024 with the addition of the Carousel Trail and trails in turns 9, 11 and 12.
New in 2024, fans will be able to enjoy a new restroom facility at Turn 1, complete with a shower area to cater to the needs of spectators camping on the Road America ground, as well as upgrades to the existing Kohler restrooms.
McMahon’s touch can be seen throughout most of the turns in the park, reflecting our deep involvement in its ongoing development and upkeep. By working on various projects across the grounds, we have helped ensure that Road America remains a top destination for both drivers and fans.
