McMahon’s Public Safety and Municipal Management group is dedicated to finding new and innovative ways to make a difference in the communities we serve, provide solutions that will make a positive impact on the lives of those we work with and to be a trusted partner in the community. We understand that every community is unique, and we utilize our full breadth of services to meet the specific needs of each client.

Public Safety and Emergency Management

Public safety is the protection of people, property, and infrastructure from natural and man-made disasters. It includes disaster preparedness, mitigation, response, and recovery. It encompasses a wide range of activities, from firefighting to law enforcement. Emergency management focuses on preparing for and responding to major disasters. This can include natural disasters such as tornadoes or man-made disasters such as terrorist attacks.

Having a public safety and emergency management plan helps ensure that essential services, such as police and fire protection, are not interrupted during a disaster. A well-designed plan can also help minimize the impact of a disaster. McMahon offers several services to assist communities.

Fire, Police, EMS and Emergency Management Services

McMahon can provide interim work in fire, police, EMS and emergency management roles. This support is often needed when there is a change in leadership or a vacancy in a key position and helps ensure that essential services are not interrupted. Our team of public safety and emergency management professionals are experts at what they do because they have real-life experience as law enforcement officers, fire officials, EMS providers, military personnel and public safety specialists.

Management Counsel

McMahon also provides emergency management counsel, a service that offers guidance and support to those who are responsible for emergency management. It can help with planning, training, and exercises. It can also provide advice on policies and procedures.

"When COVID-19 affected the Menominee Indian Tribe in 2019, one of our first calls was to McMahon to enlist the assistance of The Public Safety Group."

Ben Warrington, Emergency Management Coordinator for Menominee Indian Tribe of Wisconsin

Public Management

Public management is the process of planning, organizing, directing, and controlling the resources and activities of a government organization. It includes the development and implementation of policies, programs, and services. Public management also encompasses the administration of public institutions.

We understand the challenges and opportunities that municipalities face and can provide on-site assistance for municipal administrations, providing counsel, recommendations and help in implementation of those recommendations.

  • Public administration services
  • Public works management
  • Parks, recreation and facilities management
  • Public management counsel
  • Consolidation/shared service studies
  • Organizational analysis
  • Staffing and operations reviews

Hiring

McMahon can help communities with their hiring needs for important roles in public safety and emergency management. We have a team of experts who can assist with the recruiting and selection process. We also offer training and development services to help employees be successful in their new roles.

“Smaller communities don’t always have the staffing to do a project, but they have a need to do a project. That’s where McMahon can help. The Public Safety and Municipal Management group has a passion to help. My goal is to apply my municipal experience in a way that relieves stress and makes a difference for communities.”

Lori Gosz, McMahon public management specialist

Security Services

Municipalities and organizations must consider security and vulnerabilities when planning for disasters. By identifying potential threats, municipalities can develop plans to protect residents and property.

  • Security assessments
  • Vulnerability assessments
  • Prevention programs
  • Response plans

Security and Tactical Training and Active Assailant Preparedness

Security and tactical training, as well as active assailant preparedness training, are also part of McMahon’s service offerings. Our team of experts can provide your organization with the knowledge and skills necessary to protect your people and property.

"Hostile threats are real and they are increasing. Taking additional steps to protect your community are just as important as having fire extinguishers and medical kits on sites."

Steve Norem, public safety specialist

Security Design

We also work collaboratively with our engineering and architectural design colleagues to enhance the safety and security of facilities. The design of a building can have a significant impact on the safety and security of the people who use it. By taking security into consideration during the design phase of a project, our team can help to create a safer and more secure environment for the people who use the building.

  • The type of facility
  • The location of the facility
  • The people who will be using the facility
  • The potential threats to the facility

Building Inspections

Building inspections are conducted to ensure that buildings meet local building codes and ordinances. Inspectors check for code violations and make sure that buildings are safe for occupancy.

McMahon offers UDC and UCC building inspection services; our team of certified inspectors will conduct a thorough examination of the property to ensure that it meets code requirements. Additionally, we offer plan reviews and permitting services.

McMahon can integrate its building inspection services with Geographical Information System (GIS) technology to provide a more efficient and effective service. GIS building inspections are conducted using a computerized mapping system to track and record data related to the inspection of a building. This technology allows inspectors to identify code violations and potential safety hazards more easily. Additionally, GIS can be used to create a database of information about buildings that can be accessed by city officials and the public.
