To address lack of truck parking capacity and upgrade site facilities, Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT)/ Bureau of Highway Maintenance (BHM) hired McMahon for the CONSTRUCTION ADMINISTRATION of the Reconstruction and Expansion of SRA 51 and SRA 52 located in Manitowoc County.
Work was split into two contracts, with the 1225-10-73 project involving building construction, while the 1225-10-72 project involved site construction. On the 73 ID, work involved razing the existing buildings on the site and the construction of new comfort buildings and maintenance garages on each site. Unique aspects of the design include geothermal heating, SIP roofing system, precast concrete panels for the walls, metal standing seam roofing, and UV disinfectant for water treatment.
On the 72 ID, staff oversaw the expansion of the truck parking to nearly triple the existing capacity. This involved all new utilities (storm sewer and sanitary sewer), storm water treatment in the form of ponds on each site, significant amount of grading with both cuts and fills required, and concrete pavement. Ramps were reconstructed entering and leaving the sites as well. Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) elements were involved including a Dynamic Message Sign (DMS) mounted 4 miles in advance of each site, integrated camera systems for BHM remote use, and internet connectivity. The site was finished off with thousands of trees and plants as well as site lighting including high mast structures.
