Matthew Tan, an engineer in McMAHON’s Water & Wastewater Group, recently co-wrote an article for the Fall 2018 issue of the Wisconsin Section of the American Water Works Association (AWWA) quarterly newsletter. Matthew’s article focused on the non-profit organization Akelos, which provides technical support and collaborates with communities to design effective water systems that provide clean water to small, rural communities around the world. Akelos was founded in 2016 by a group of seven students from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, including Matthew. “I have always wanted to be involved in developmental water projects. Water is such a vital resource and it’s staggering to think about how many people go without this precious resource we take for granted,” says Tan. He is still involved with Akelos, and currently assists with providing quality assurance for the projects designed by the organization, and also serves on Akelos’ Board of Directors.
