THEDACARE MEDICAL CENTER NEW LONDON
New London, Wisconsin
Michael McMahon, AIA, NCARB
ThedaCare Medical Center – New London is an existing rural Critical Access Hospital with an integral Ambulatory Care Facility. The completion of a large two story addition along with the renovation of adjacent service areas relieved the stress of the growing Ambulatory Care Service area and provided a new modern Surgery Wing.
“Lean and Green”
Numerous Lean events were incorporated into the program. Lean tools were utilized throughout the project including Gemba Walks, Mock-ups, Vertical Value Streams, Pull Scheduling and others. The project was completed using a true Integrated Project Delivery model along with Target Costing. “Green Guide for Health Care” guidelines were incorporated into the design of the new facility including a number of energy saving features.
Cellular flow concepts, visual control, point-of-use storage, team concepts and other important lean delivery model concepts are supported by the design of the building. The entire registration and scheduling process was revised. Clinical care cells were created to allow cross support between teams, shared storage, co-location of equipment and enhanced communication. Cell leads were introduced to control flow of patients and staff so as to keep load leveled service and continuous flow. Cell leads have visual control of patient service areas along with visual connection between other cell leads.
Recent projects include expansion of the orthopedics exam pod, an MRI suite, a loading dock addition, and an emergency department addition, as well as development of a conceptual design for cardiac care renovations, pulmonary rehabilitation renovations, and imaging department renovations. All improvements follow the guidelines of a master facility plan that McMahon earlier completed for the owner.
