Prospect Avenue Bridge Replacement & Road Reconstruction

Appleton, WI back to portfolio

This project included the replacement of the Prospect Avenue Bridge and approaches, as well as the reconstruction of Jackman Street which passes under the Prospect Avenue Bridge.

Project Specifics:

Construction limits from State Street to Water Street for Jackman Street and State Street to Walnut Street for Prospect Avenue.  The Prospect Avenue Bridge is a 62-ft long prestressed deck girder bridge.  In addition to bridge and roadwork, an extensive retaining wall system was required on both sides of Jackman Street including elevated sidewalks.

Met Challenges:

This project posed a wide array of challenges due to the unique and challenging surrounding site geometry and complex drainage components of the area, which is near the Fox River.

  • Significant CSD elements on the structure and retaining walls
  • Several major design changes were made during construction
  • Multiple major utility conflicts were resolved during construction without delay to the project
  • The presence of highly variable soil conditions onsite created difficulties with pile driving, excavation and underground utility installations, combined with multi-stage construction of the structure which included over 160 piles and multi-level wingwall footings
