Machesney Park FEMA HMG and DCEO Funding for Flood Relief

Machesney Park, Illinois back to portfolio

After a devastating flood in 2008 affecting more than 600 homes, the Village of Machesney Park contracted with McMAHON to apply for a Hazard Mitigation Grant (HMG) for the purchase of flood-prone homes, the demolition of those homes, and the restoration of the resulting area into green space. This voluntary program would allow homeowners to sell their properties to the Village at pre-disaster value, pay for the demolition of the home, and allow for the area to return to green space and subsequent future water storage. The HMG Grant funded by FEMA covers 75% of the costs. McMAHON also applied a matching grant from the Illinois Dept. of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO). The Village was awarded both of these grants for a total of over $4,000,000. The entire project will be a long one. McMAHON has submitted two additional grant applications for Phase II of the project to IEMA and DCEO and is currently working on Phase III. The Village is headed in the right direction, greatly limiting the costs of repetitive flooding.

To date, the Village has received over $10 million in grant funding secured through work by McMAHON.
